How to behave as Alice in Wonderland-about boredom and curiosity

چکیده
In the context of cultural computing, we created a mixed reality environment that influences user affect and evokes predefined user behaviour. The theoretical challenge is applying persuasive design to virtual and augmented reality. Based on begin of the story ‘Alice’s in adventures in Wonderland’ users play the role of the character Alice in a park scene (the first stage out of a total of six). The mixed reality environment ALICE is designed for users to experience the same sequence of emotional and behavioural states as Alice did in her quest through surreal locations and events. This particular study addresses the sequential arousal and interdependencies of two drives: boredom and curiosity. Based on literature, we introduce general design guidelines for arousing boredom and explain how boredom can result in curiosity. We report on the design and redesign of the park environment with the entrance to the rabbit hole. In an experiment effectively arousing boredom can be demonstrated. Based on the experimental results we redesigned the park environment. In a second experiment effectively arousing curiosity was shown so that the particular sequence of events (e.g. appearance of the ‘White rabbit’ robot) had a significant positive influence on the arousal of curiosity and on triggering and guiding intended user behaviour. 2010 International Federation for Information Processing All rights reserved.

Children's Motivation Analysis Test (CMAT): An experimental manipulation of curiosity and boredom
The present study investigated the influence of manipulating the states of curiosity and boredom on the 10 scales of the Children's Motivation Analysis Test (CMAT). The CMAT is a multidimensional objective (T-data) instrument measuring several important dynamic motivation traits among primary school children. The CMAT was administered to 202 grade 6 and 7 children, preand post-exposure to eithe...
متن کامل[Alice in Wonderland syndrome].
CASE REPORT A case of Alice in Wonderland syndrome is described as the only sign of Epstein-Barr virus infection. DISCUSSION Epstein-Barr virus infection may include visual symptoms as the first or only signs of disease. All patients presenting with a clinical picture consistent with the Alice in Wonderland syndrome should undergo serological testing for Epstein-Barr virus infection.
متن کاملAutomatic Extraction of Social Networks from Literary Text: A Case Study on Alice in Wonderland
In this paper we present results for two tasks: social event detection and social network extraction from a literary text, Alice in Wonderland. For the first task, our system trained on a news corpus using tree kernels and support vector machines beats the baseline systems by a statistically significant margin. Using this system we extract a social network from Alice in Wonderland. We show that...
متن کاملAlice in Wonderland syndrome as an initial manifestation of Epstein-Barr virus infection.
We present a patient with serologically confirmed Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection who had illusions of size, shape, and colour of objects but none of the typical symptoms and signs peculiar to infectious mononucleosis (IM) except sore throat which developed 2 weeks after the initial visual disturbances. The bizarre feelings about the images of body and objects are called the 'Alice in Wonder...
متن کاملInvestigating the Possibilities of Reading Literary Texts in Light of a Sociolinguistic Perspective: Applications on the Case of Alice Walker’s Selected Short Stories
The present research tries to show how race, class, and gender and intersectionality in general, have their decisive impact on the black- American women; and how Alice Walker as a womanist, in her selected short stories, tries to show that black women in the U.S. suffer two-fold acts of oppression and discrimination, i.e. male violence affects all women in social life, irrespective of age or so...
